Top 10 Things You Shouldn't Miss in Budapest

1. Go on a River Cruise on the Danube

Location: Danube Promenade, Pest

If it’s your first time in Budapest, I recommend going on a sightseeing river cruise. This is one of the best ways to get an overview of the city and see some of the main sights.

You’ll pass by landmarks like the Hungarian Parliament Building, Buda Castle, and Fisherman’s Bastion.

I did several evening cruises, and it was magical seeing the lights reflecting on the river. Many cruises offer dinner or live music, but even a basic sightseeing cruise is enough to appreciate the beauty of Budapest from the water.

2. Visit Széchenyi Thermal Bath

Location: City Park, Pest

Visiting a thermal bath is a must in Budapest, and the Széchenyi Thermal Bath is the biggest and one of the best with its Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance architecture.

There are 18 pools, both indoor and outdoor, fed by natural hot springs. After a day of sightseeing, soaking in the warm water is amazing.

I recommend trying the outdoor pools, especially watching locals play chess while relaxing in the bath. This spot is great for unwinding and experiencing a part of Budapest’s culture.

3. Take a Guided Tour in the Budapest Parliament

Location: Pest Side, near the Danube River

The Hungarian Parliament Building is stunning both inside and out. The building is enormous and impressive, with intricate details in its neo-Gothic architecture.

Joining a guided tour would be worth it since you will learn about Hungary’s history and see the Hungarian Crown Jewels up close.

The marble halls and gold decorations make this one of the most beautiful government buildings I’ve ever visited.

Make sure to include this in your list of top things to do in Budapest and book your tickets ahead of time, as tours often sell out.

4. Visit the Fisherman's Bastion

Location: Castle District, Buda

Fisherman’s Bastion is one of my favorite spots in Budapest for panoramic views. The architecture is unique, almost like something from a fairytale, with its seven towers representing the seven Magyar tribes.

Standing there, you will swept away by the views of the Danube River, the Parliament Building, St. Stephen's Basilica, and the Chain Bridge.

I recommend visiting early in the morning or in the evening when it’s less crowded, allowing you to fully appreciate the breathtaking scenery and take some fantastic photos.

5. Walk Around the Castle District

Location: Castle District, Buda

Walking around the Castle District was one of the best ways to explore Budapest's history. The area is full of historic landmarks, including Buda Castle, Matthias Church, and Fisherman’s Bastion.

The cobblestone streets and charming courtyards make it a perfect place to wander and soak in the atmosphere. There are plenty of museums to visit and cafes to enjoy as well.

I took my time exploring this area, and the views of the Danube River and the Pest side of the city were truly spectacular.

6. Visit St. Peter's Basilica

Location: District V, Pest

St. Stephen's Basilica is a must-see landmark. Named after the first king of Hungary, St. Stephen, this cathedral is filled with incredible details, from the high domed ceiling to the elaborate frescoes and gold accents.

The Basilica is also home to Hungary's most sacred relic, St. Stephen’s mummified right hand.

Climbing to the top of the dome and the 360-degree view of the city is worth every one of the 364 steps. If you have the time, I suggest attending one of the concerts often held inside, the acoustics are wonderful.

7. Walk Through the Chain Bridge

A night view of a bridge over a river

Location: Between Buda and Pest

The Chain Bridge was the first permanent bridge to link Buda and Pest, and it remains a symbol of unity in the city. Walking across this bridge is one of those quintessential things to do in Budapest.

The stone lions guarding the bridge, the grandeur of its iron chains, and the spectacular views of Gellért Hill and both riverbanks are unforgettable.

I recommend taking this walk at night when the bridge itself is lit up, and you can see both sides of the city glowing in the dark. It’s a short walk but filled with iconic views that shouldn’t be missed.

8. Have a Drink in Szimpla Kert

Location: Jewish Quarter, District VII, Pest

If you’re looking for something different, Szimpla Kert is the original and most famous of Budapest’s ruin pubs. These bars are set in old, abandoned buildings and are decorated with unique, mismatched furniture.

Szimpla Kert has a great atmosphere, and it’s a fun place to have a drink and experience Budapest’s nightlife. I loved the creativity of the space, every corner had something unexpected.

It’s definitely a must-visit if you want to see the unique side of Budapest.

9. Visit Vajdahunyad's Castle

A castle like building with a clock tower

Location: City Park, Pest

Located within City Park, Vajdahunyad Castle is one of Budapest’s hidden treasures. Originally built in 1896 for Hungary's Millennial Exhibition, the castle combines several architectural styles, including Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque.

There is also a lovely pond surrounding the castle where you can take a paddleboat in summer or ice skate in winter.

I recommend taking your time exploring the grounds, it’s a beautiful and relaxing spot in the middle of the city.

10. Have a Coffee and Dessert in New York Café

Location: Erzsébet körút, Pest

The New York Café is known as the most beautiful café in the world, and after visiting, I can see why.

The magnificence of this place is astonishing, frescoed ceilings, marble columns, gold accents, and chandeliers that make you feel as though you've stepped into a royal palace.

The coffee might be on the pricier side, but it's worth it for the atmosphere alone. If you want a taste of luxury, visiting New York Café is one of the best things to do in Budapest.
